Common Visa Interview Questions
Below are commonly asked questions during a U.S. student visa interview. Be prepared to answer them honestly and confidently:
- Why do you want to study in the United States?
- Why did you choose this university (SHSU)?
- What program or major are you enrolling in?
- What is your major in the study?
- What is your GPA and academic transcript?
- Can you provide your course schedule?
- What is your academic background?
- Who is sponsoring your education?
- What does your sponsor do for a living?
- Can you show your sponsor's bank statement?
- Do you have any relatives in the U.S.?
- What will you do after graduation?
- Do you plan to return to your home country?
- Why not study in your home country?
- Have you taken any standardized tests (TOEFL, IELTS, GRE, etc.)?
- How did you learn about this university?
- What ties do you have to your home country?
- Why should we give you a student visa?
- Are you going to work there (on campus or off campus)?
- Did you work before in Turkey?
Note:
- Your answers should match the information in your DS-160 form.
- Answer with certainty and clarity, keeping responses short and confident.
- Do not sound like your answers are scripted or memorized. Be natural and sincere.
- Speak in English during the interview. It reflects your readiness to study in the U.S.
- The visa officer likely does not speak Turkish, so use English as your primary language.
- Try not to ask the officer to repeat questions many times, as this may create a negative impression.
